Tokyo in the 2000s was like a Neon Pop Culture, Space Age Paradise of Cyber Technology and Futurist Fashion Aesthetics. Blending ancient spiritual tradition with cutting-edge technology and a Paris in the East sense of design and fashion.
Anybody who visited or lived in Tokyo during the period would tell you - there was something in the air! An atmosphere of positivity, excitement and a feeling like anything could happen - anywhere, anytime in the world's largest city.
It was most definitely decadent.
It was also much less of a destination for tourists, so foreigners living there were somewhat of a novelty. Walking down the street, I was greeted with stares, glances or even approached by strangers I had never met, curious to find out where I was from.
The intensity of the city was off the charts - with neon, excitement and passion 24/7. Oh, and the nightlife. It was raging with energy, raucous and rowdy - where random encounters could lead anywhere and everywhere.
Nightclubs and parties in Roppongi, Shinjuku and Shibuya often didn't close until just the next morning, but stayed open until noon the next day.
The dancefloor was a melting pot, where especially in Roppongi - you could meet anyone from anywhere in the world.
Tokyo was filled with money, endless desire and spontaneous opportunity at every corner.
Many people look back to the period -- in the 2000s -- as better days, rather than the current reality.
It was also a city of every creative and unimaginable subculture. Some were famously outlandish, while others were very obscure and no longer exist.
It was a time period many would go back to in a heartbeat.
Anyway.
Before moving to Tokyo, still in the 90s, a friend who had recently returned home from an extended stay in Japan told me...
"Sean, I don't know what you are doing with your life... Or what you want to do in the future, but you should be living in Tokyo now. Everything you love is there! The city is like Bladerunner! Shinjuku is going off the charts right now! And you are not there!"
With a lot of hesitation and apprehension, I did move. All I can tell you, certainly and positively, is that it was better than Bladerunner. I do however think that the movie is a truly beautiful piece of art and a modern masterpiece.
But...
Tokyo in the 2000s was better than a masterpiece.
Like nothing I had ever seen in my life.
It was a time when a Sunday or Monday night was almost as electric as Saturday - because the city never stopped!
