While TOKYO BREATHLESS NEON LOVE covers the phenomena that was the Ura Harajuku boom at its peak... One of the other subcultural landscapes it takes you on an adventure through, is most definitely - Shibuya... namely Gyaru Culture.
Now I'm not going to get wordy here about the details of Gyaru Culture... because you are going to be reading about that in the book... but let me start with what it was not... and that was... it definitely wasn't stressful...
The World of Gyaru Culture was Stress Free!
I was lucky to live and grow in Japan when I was surrounded by both the Ura Harajuku world and Shibuya Gyaru Style... and while in Ura Harajuku there was a lot more than meets the eye... Shibuya at the time was kind of the opposite... more like...
Just go crazy and live for the moment!!
I like this image from an old Gyaru Fashion magazine, because it kind of has that feeling from the time.
平成のギャルファッション雑誌のイメージです。
文中に面白いフレーズがあります。
“カジュアル好きの夏海GALはクラシュ デニミニをチョイス!”
“デニミニ”は普段な日本語ではありませんが、普段な単語より楽しいと思います。 その頃のギャル語はめちゃクリエーティブだった思います。
There is a funny phrase in the Japanese text reading...
"Deni-Mini"
The phrase "Deni Mini" is not conventional Japanese language... but is an abbreviation of the English... "Mini Denim Skirt."
Gyaru were highly creative and around that time there was a non-stop flow of new Japanese words and phrases created on the fly.
Anyway... I will write about the intricate world of crazy Japanese slang another time.
