Initially I just wanted to put these photos on the page, purely because I like them. Inevitably, they inspired a new story.

Although this is just but one millisecond in time - you can feel the mid-90s looking at this photo - the fashion, the baggy denim and most of all the feeling of space in the city. Not just the emptiness of silent city streets, but - mental space. Nobody is looking at a mobile phone or filming for social media. Netscape Navigator as a popular way to search things was still a few years away in the future. Many people hadn't even used the internet yet. So, you can see a group of people with unwavering attention completely focused on what is happening in the moment.

One of my favourite types of skateboarders to watch are people who go really big, taking risks and go for it no matter what. Skaters like Jeremy Wray, Pat Duffy, Chad Muska, Ray Simmons and Jeff Pettit (RIP). People who used the street environment to push themselves to go huge, beyond what had been imagined possible.

There was a skater making waves in Australia in the 90s who I consider to be that type of skateboarder...

AJ Mueller

私が見るのが好きな種類のスケーターの一つは、本当に大きなことをして、リスクを負い、 何があるともそれに負かって突き進む人たちです。ジェレミー・レイ、パット・ダフィー、チャド・ムスカ、レイ・シモンズ、ジェフ・ペティット(RIP)といったスケーターたちです。 ストリート環境を利用して、想像を超えた大きな目標を達成しようと自分自身を追い込むスケーターたちです。 オーストラリアに９０年代にそういう種類のスケートボーダーだと思うスケーターがいました。AJ・ミューラーです。

There was no social media or short form video flying across the globe at the time, so people overseas couldn't see what AJ was doing back then, but I remember.

I would often cross paths with AJ in the city, skating stairs, ledges and curbs as we moved through the city. It was kind of unplanned and would just happen naturally. AJ would always push himself to take whatever he was doing to another level - never satisfied to just do something on a small scale - whatever he was working on he would use it to leverage his technique to a much bigger scale.

I remember one session skating with AJ and Ronnie Roberts - who often skated together with AJ - at Prahran Bowl. I think we were excited to be skating together, but were talking a lot while skating intensely. Ronnie told me he'd been going to techno parties and had got a weight-training set up for his birthday.

To me this was unbelievable and really got me inspired, as I had never been to a nightclub and even though I had a tiny body... I did want to be strong.

Later in life, I spent much of my time in gyms lifting weights - which ultimately was definitely not beneficial to me.

Anyway...

Other times I would just bump into AJ by chance late at night in the streets. He would often ask me a lot of questions about whatever life adventure I was on. Despite AJ's robust, powerhouse style of street skating - he was always quite gently spoken and listened a lot more than he spoke. I thought that it was unusual, because it is not common to find people with strong listening skills - most people just seem to like to speak.

当時はSNSもインタネット動画もなかったので、海外の人はAJの活動を見ることができなかったけど、私は覚えています。 AJとはよく街で偶然会って一緒にスケートをしていました。それはある意味計画外で、 自然に起こったものでした。AJは、自分がやっているすべてのことを別のレベルに引き上げようと常に自分自身を追い込みました。 AJは小規模なスケールで何かを行うだけでは決して満足せず、自分が取り組んでいたものはすべて、自分のテクニックをさらに大きなスケールに活用するために使用していました。 プラーン・スケートボウル「Prahran Bowl」AJとロニー・ロバーツ（よくAJと一緒にスケートをしていた）と一緒にスケートしたセッションのことを覚えています。 熱心にスケートをしながらたくさん話をしていました。ロニーは時々テクノパーティに行っていて、誕生日にウェイトトレーニングのセットをプレゼントしてもらったと私に話しました。

私にとって、これは信じられないことでしたし、本当にインスピレーションを受けました。 ナイトクラブに行ったこともなかったし、体も小さかったのですが… 強くなりたかったのです。 後年、私はジムに通い、ウェイトトレーニングをたくさんしましたが、それは結局的に間違いなく、私にとって良いことではありませんでした。
また、時々夜遅くに街で偶然AJに会いました。AJは私がどんな人生のアドベンチャーにチャレンジしているかについて、よく私にたくさんの質問をしました。 AJのパワフルなストリートスケートスタイルにもかかわらず、常に穏やかに話し、話すよりもずっと話を聞いていました。 リスニングスキルが高い人はあまりないので、これは珍しいことだと思いました。ほとんどの人はただ話すのが好きなようです。

Skateboarders are in essence very artistic people. I think if you look carefully at the way they skate - you can see a lot about a person's inner emotions - through the strokes, lines and marks they make on the environment through movement.

The photo above was taken at the city square, which was one of my favourite places to skate in the 90s. It had all sorts of combinations of small and big block style architecture, stairs, gaps and even a pit style area - where I saw b-boys breakdancing during a busy office lunch hour, during one of my first trips to the city by myself as a young teenager.

Something that you can't experience from looking at the photo - was the water. In some areas of the City Square, you could barely have a conversation with someone close by, because of the loud roar of water - fountains raging down a jigsaw of tiny concrete steps into asymmetric patterns of obstacles and man-made square-like ponds.

I remember pushing myself to learn new tricks to the intense background noise of water and the strong smell of chlorine bubbling from the fountains.

The photo below was taken at Melbourne Central, which many people at the time called the Daimaru Double Set. In the early 90s, the Japanese department store 'Daimaru' had made the huge leap of setting a department store in Melbourne - it was ahead of its time. I used to visit there to get inspiration, before I had ever been to Japan.

スケートボーダーは本質的に非常に芸術的な人達です。スケートの仕方を注意深く観察すると、 動きを通してその人の内面の感情がよくわかると思います。 上の写真は、９０年代に私のお気に入りのスケート場所の一つだった「CITY SQUARE」で撮影したものです。建築のスタイルは角張っていて、でかいブロックと階段が多かったです。 １０代前半の頃、初めて街を訪れた際に、B-Boyたちが「CITY SQUARE」にブレイクダンスをしているのを見たことがあります。 この写真だけでは味わえない、それは「水」でした。CITY SQUAREの一部のエリアでは、水音がうるさく、近くにいる人とほとんど会話ができませんでした。 建築物と合わせて噴水が多く、滝の音が響くエリアでした。水の強烈な背景騒音に対する新しいトリックを学ぶために自分自身に挑戦したことを覚えています。 下の写真は、当時多くのスケーターが「DAIMARUダブルセット」と呼んでいたメルボルン・セントラルで撮影したものです。 ９０年代初頭、大丸はメルボルンに時代に先駆けたデパートを開設し、大きく飛躍しました。日本に行く前は、インスピレーションを得るためによくそこを訪れていました。

I used to look at this double set of stairs every day. You can't really tell how big it is in the photo. You can see skaters had lined up their boards with the intent of communicating to the viewer of the photo, just how long the gap really is. The run up was bumpy, not direct and although it might not have been possible - I imagined my head touching the ceiling attempting such a gap.

When I heard AJ had pushed himself to make this gap, I was so happy, because it meant I could stop wondering about it.

私はこの二重階段を毎日眺めていました。写真ではその大きさはではあまり伝わりません。 写真のスケーターたちが、写真を見る人に実際のギャップの長さを伝える目的でボードを並べていました。 助走のペーブメントエリアはデコボコしていて、このトリックを成功させるのは大きな挑戦でした。 雑誌のキャプションによると、写真を撮った当時、多くの日本から観光客がAJのこのトリックを応援していたとのことです。 AJがこのトリックを成功させたと聞いたとき、私はとても嬉しかったです。 なぜなら、私は本当にこのトリックをしたかったのだが、友人が成功したが嬉しかったです。

最近AJのインタビューを見ました。AJは、ストリートスケートボードスタイルに大きな影響を与えてきた世界的に有名なスケーターであるジョシュ・カリス「JOSH KALIS」と出会いについて話していました。 AJは、ジョシュがオーストラリアでデモを行うツアーに一緒に行こうと誘ってくれたと説明しました。 ストリートスケートの最先端にいる人がAJのスキルを認めるのは、素晴らしいリスペクトの表れだと思いました。 当時、オーストラリアのストリートシーンはほとんど報道されておらず、海外の人たちにとってAJミューラーのようなスケーターを見るのは難しいでした。 AJは力強くパワフルなスタイルと静かな性格を組み合わせて、大きなギャップを飛び越える能力を持っていました。 AJは遠慮せずに挑戦していました。AJのスタイルを一言で表すと… 多分… 「勇気」です。 スケートボードの世界か人生において、何らかの大きなギャップを飛び越えるときも、「勇気」が高いレベルに到達するための鍵となる可能性があります。

I recently watched an interview with AJ, where he talked about meeting Josh Kalis - a world-famous skateboarder who has been a major influence in street skateboarding style. AJ explained that Josh invited him to go on tour with him doing demos in Australia. I always liked Josh Kalis' style not just as a skater, but how he combined different fashion elements into his street style.

I thought it was an awesome sign of respect from someone on the cutting edge of street skating acknowledging AJ's skill. He probably saw his talent. At that time, it was hard for people overseas to see someone like AJ Mueller with little coverage of Australia's street scene. I am sure what he was doing would have connected with people in the States and they would have really liked his style.

AJ had the ability to leap huge gaps combining a powerful robust style and a quiet sense of artistic focus. He always went for it without holding back. If I could translate AJ's style into one word... I suppose it would be...

Courage

When clearing any sort of enormous gap in skateboarding or in life... Whether it be physically or mentally... Blasting ahead, landing in a new level or destination - far beyond what had ever been imagined... The raw courage to reach new heights - can be the ignition into another realm.

If you have made it this far, well done... good job - you must by a very curious and clever person - hungry for knowledge and to explore other time periods. You might get the feeling that I am dancing around the main content of my new book in these stories... That is because I am. It is one of the most mysterious works I have written and not everything in this world is on the surface.
