Hanging Out with Professional Skaters in the 90s

Recently, I started reminiscing about encounters that I had meeting with professional skaters in the 90s. I consider myself fortunate to be in the midst of everything in a classic era and going on adventures meeting pioneers in the skateboarding world.

One such encounter was a professional skater that needs no introduction, one with an uncanny genius for technical street skating, whose name has become distinguished in the history of skateboarding - Eric Koston.

The First Waves of US Street Skateboarding Professionals Reach Australia

In the mid-90s the waves of professional street skaters from the US started to flow into Australian shores. After the groundbreaking series of Ramp Riot Tours in the 80s which were broadcast on television and VHS - the arrival of big names in street skating was something very new and special for the time.

Globe Footwear Organizes a Street Super Tour

As part of one of these larger street skating tours Hardcore Enterprises - now known as Globe - organized a larger scale street skating tour of Australia. I guess Peter and Stephen Hill could see the evolution of skating right at the moment and helped the local scene by importing some inspiration from the center of international skateboarding - the USA.

Eric Koston Arrives in Australia for The First Time

On one of these tours Eric Koston arrived in Melbourne as part of a larger group tour. I don't think I really need to introduce Eric Koston in this article - because he is definitely a household name. I really liked the way Eric Koston combined the most technical tricks with going really big. In fact, he could skate anything… Curbs, ledges, huge flights of stairs and vert (big ramps). I used to watch him on video a lot in the early 90s and couldn't understand how he landed such difficult tricks with extreme precision. From his very early parts in the H Street videos, I could tell he was a skateboarding genius.

Like in my other story about Rudy Johnson (Link here) he was already famous and cemented his place as one of the best street skaters in the world. Although this tour was not unannounced - it was advertised on a national level well in advance.

Around this time, I was fortunate to be sponsored by companies in the skate industry. Stephen and Peter Hill as well as Gary Valentine at Hardcore Enterprises had organized the tour as well as a type of meet and greet for the sponsored team with the just arrived professional skaters.

Eric Koston Arrives at Prahran Bowl

I remember arriving at Prahran Bowl where a small group of the visiting professionals met us, while others were still at the hotel. Among this small group was Eric Koston. After introducing and saying hello, some of the team started skating casually in the bowl while Eric Koston and the other professionals rested sitting on a log bench beside the bowl. They seemed jet lagged and were just getting adjusted to the new surroundings in Australia.

Something Peculiar Happened

I watched friends and fellow team members skating with me in the bowl, when I noticed something peculiar. Eric Koston seemed to be watching me as I moved around the bowl. Despite being jet lagged, he sat with a straight posture and sharp poise - his eyes tracking my every movement to different points in the bowl. Having one of the best skaters in the world watching me was not something I was used to.

How Eric Koston Brings Humor into Skateboarding

Eric Koston is known for bringing humour to skateboarding, sometimes messing around with style and doing funny tricks to make people laugh. I suppose when you are that good at skateboarding, messing and joking around can take the pressure off a little.

Although, the way Eric's eyes tracked my movements - he did not seem to be joking around at all. He appeared to be very analytical and seemed to have the mental ability to preempt other skater's movements on the board.

The Perceptive Mind of Eric Koston

Underneath the lighthearted and relaxed approach to operating at peak levels he seemed to be extremely perceptive. It was like he understood my movements with greater depth and awareness than I had of myself. His eyes tracked me like a falcon - seemingly without blinking. He was clearly reading and assessing me.

As I saw him watching me, it was very difficult to pretend that I wasn't aware of being observed - I became even more nervous. My muscles became more restricted and couldn't really focus. As I skated in a figure eight type flow through the bowl, I decided to do a flip trick out of the bowl and on to an area a little higher up. It was something I would rarely do and didn't like doing. Although, the nervousness was really starting to kick in so I somehow decided to do a trick I never really did much.

I was a small person, but preferred to throw my body off stairs or off heights rather than just popping up onto something. What I was about to do was clearly not going to be anything spectacular, but as I felt Eric Koston's gaze over my shoulder - I had pretty much lost any sense of what I was doing.

Feeling The Pressure

As I rolled back toward the area near where Eric was sitting, I shifted my feet ready to do the flip trick out of the bowl up onto another area. For one millisecond I glanced and noticed Eric clearly assessing what I was about to do. I hit the transition, flipped my board out of the bowl catching it and landing in a routine fashion… and then…

Suddenly my weight whipped backwards, and like lightning I slipped back and smashed the back of my head on the concrete. It was the type of slam that made an obvious sound. 'To slam' means to fall in skateboarding. You could hear the bones at the back of my skull smack the concrete.

Whack!!!

I did not black out or lose any sense of consciousness but sat up after the fall, looking to my left. Eric winced… As if to say...

"That looked terrible."

It was pretty safe to say, any attempt to make a good impression on Eric Koston wasn't going swimmingly.

It was also definitely nerve-racking having one of the world's best skaters quietly observing.

US Street Stars Observe Prahran Bowl

I kept skating around the bowl and then sat down next to the professional skaters as they rested after a long international flight. As they sat talking, I noticed Eric looking at different areas of the bowl. He seemed to be imagining the possibilities of tricks - visualizing how he would do them while casually engaged in conversation. I sat on the edge of the group of American professionals feeling very self-conscious, although people did talk to me a little to include me in the conversation.

Imagining The Possibilities

There used to be a very small handrail at the edge of Prahran Bowl to help people learning go into the bowl. Roller skaters and rollerbladers also used the bowl so sometimes they would hold the rail to ease themselves into the bowl. I imagine it wouldn't have been easy to roller skate straight into the middle of Prahran Bowl - so the rail was a great helper for people.

A Very Sudden Request

Eric brought everyone's attention to the little handrail over on the side. As he seemed to be imagining something and looked out into the horizon above, he then said...

"It would be good if someone could Switch Backside Lipslide that handrail."

He then suddenly turned his head, his gaze reaching past the whole group of professionals that surrounded him and with poise looked toward me... straight at my face. Straight into my eyes.

"Oh no..." I thought to myself. "Eric Koston is asking me to do the impossible."

The Technical Development of Skateboarding from The Early to Mid-90s

For all the people out there, I am not sure if I can exactly explain what a “switch backside lipslide down a handrail” is. “Switch” is in the opposite stance. Although, what I can tell you is that for the time in the early 90s that it was a very hard trick. In fact, I think I had only ever seen one person ever do it in the world at that time. It was not a 'never been done' trick - but it was pretty close. It was very hard for the time.

I was in shock

Heading Over to The Handrail

Reluctantly, I got up and took my board with me over to the little handrail. Looking at the rail, I put my feet on my board in the run-up area with a semi crouching stance that I imagined I would need to do the trick. I quickly put the thought out of my mind…

"Forget it," I thought to myself. "That is way too hard."

After that I skated a bit more with some of the skaters from the USA in the bowl, but I had clearly put the trick Eric Koston imagined out of my mind. Something like that was just not possible to my mind at the time.

The Insightful Perspective of Andrew Trotter

Recently, I recounted this story to a friend - Andrew Trotter who was on the Hardcore team with me and also met the group of professional skaters during the activities Hardcore organized for us as a part of the tour. He was someone I really enjoyed skating with and learning technical tricks together. I have many good memories of skating curbs, ledges and stairs with Andrew. He had a positive outlook and most of all was kind.

He has lived a lot of his life between the States and Australia and during the 2000s worked on a major documentary film about the phenomena that was - World Industries. World Industries was a huge part of 90s skateboarding and I think influenced street culture in a way never seen before, throughout the 90s and 2000s.

Andrew's Experience Editing Raw and Unseen World Industries Era Footage

During the production of the film, Andrew worked on editing hours and hours of raw, unedited and unseen footage from the World Industries era filmed by Socrates Leal and other famous skate videographers. It was through this experience that he gained insight into the thought process of some of the world's most cutting-edge street skaters and how they learned such difficult tricks. I told him about the trick Eric Koston conceived at Prahran Bowl - he seemed to perceive the situation in completely different way to me and gave me a really interesting response.

"Their imagination was just fed with pure energy and determination."

“I think that's how they got so good, just trying stuff… and encouraging each other. I think being centered so close to the industry, so to speak and accessibility to products and incentives just made the impossible seem possible.”

Insight Into The Thought Process of a Skateboarding Genius

His response made an impression on me. It made me think and helped me to understand the thought process of one of the world's most famous street skaters - which had perplexed me for years after.

While I had limited what was possible within my thoughts and beliefs - someone like Eric Koston had not.

I suppose that is one way how people reach the peak of their chosen discipline going far beyond what the world has ever seen. For Eric Koston having unlimited imagination was the gateway to success and super levels of performance. From what he imagined, he seemed to analyze how to do it with his body - which would of course, took focus and extreme practice. Although, the mind seemed to be the key.

Meeting Professional Skaters for Dinner

Over the next week, we got to meet with the professional skaters several times and there was even a dinner with together. Again, like at Prahran Bowl, I was really nervous and paid a lot of attention to not dropping food from my plate onto myself - which was probably not such a big deal compared to smashing my head on the ground. I also travelled to Sydney by myself a few days later and got to see the tour continue there.

Sydney Streets in the Mid-90s

One of my favourite days was the last. The demonstrations had finished a day or two before, I decided to go skating through Sydney city streets by myself. It was a warm, sunny day and was enjoying weaving my board between the flow of shoppers flowing in and out of department stores. The energy of the city in Sydney during the 90s was buzzing - it is where I was born and learned some of the most important lessons in my life.

A Lucky Encounter with Street Superstars

Under the cool shade of high-rise buildings, in the near distance ahead I saw a bunch of skaters, looking in all directions, seemingly lost not knowing where they were.

As I approached their faces came into focus. It was a group of some of the world's best street skaters - Eric Koston, Kris Markovich, Mirko Mangum, Tony Ferguson and Kareem Campbell. As I approached, they seemed really relieved to see a familiar face within the chaos of an unfamiliar city. Not all of the skaters from the tour were there just a small group - on a mission to buy streetwear before flying back to the States. After listening to what they wanted to buy I guided them to where the main shops that sold streetwear fashion were.

Searching for 90s Fashion and Streetwear

We rolled around the city casually, from shop to shop and department store to department store - searching for fashion brands popular in the mid-90s. Brands like Nautica, Ralph Lauren Polo, Tommy Hilfiger, DKNY Sport and others. I remember at the time some of the pro skaters had baggy Tommy Hilfiger Chino pants that I had never seen. We went looking for Calvin Klein jeans in XL sizes so the fit would be baggy enough to skate in.

Sneaker Shopping with Kareem Campbell

Important on the itinerary was finding a pair of sneakers that were comfortable for Kareem Campbell to be able to skate in as well as look good wearing on the street as well.

The Technical Style of Tony Ferguson

Upon departing, I took a photo of Eric Koston and his friend Tony Ferguson on Elizabeth Street just outside Hyde Park - using a small Olympus Trip camera. I also really liked Tony Ferguson's style and technical approach to street skating. I later developed a black and white print of the two in my high school darkroom, which I kept for some years, but no longer have. It would have been a nice photo to conclude this story.

Along with Eric, Tony was one of the three skaters who took the most time to talk with me while they were on tour. In the photo, I could see that despite being legendary skateboarders who have become a part of skateboarding history - flying to unfamiliar cities across the world was not easy for someone in their late teens. I think they were just relieved to see a familiar face.

An Unexpected Adventure

It was my favourite day during this street superstar tour of Australia. I was happy to meet them in the streets of Sydney that day and go on a little adventure for a few hours.

Meeting One of The World's Best Skateboarders

Getting the chance to speak with Eric Koston, even if briefly for a few days definitely challenged my perception. I believe for every person we encounter in the world, there is a lesson to be learned. The lesson I learnt from encountering Eric in 1994 only occurred to me very recently. I learnt that for people who go beyond what is believed as possible - it all comes down to imagination. Combined with self-belief, this unlimited perception of the world becomes even more powerful... Knowing that the things we aspire to are definitely possible, even if they are not apparent to most.

In Retrospect

Looking back, I think I was lucky to meet a modern-day skateboarding genius at a time when skateboarding was in a state of huge progression and a flux of change. Going on adventures and finding opportunities to learn in the streets during the mid-90s was also something I will always remember.
