The 1990's Japanese media labelled the back streets of Harajuku as "Ura-Harajuku" or also known as just "UraHara" for a new underground movement in Japanese Fashion. UraHara was like a Fashion Wild West in the Orient - spawning some of Tokyo's most famous designers and street fashion brands.

At the time it was kind of like Hollywood - in a similar way, it was the focus of gossip and attention across the whole of Japan.

If Street Fashion was invented in the USA - It was most certainly perfected in Ura-Harajuku.

The influence of which is still being seen today in Sneakerhead Culture, the Hip Hop World and even European Luxury Fashion.

In many ways Ura-Harajuku shaped the world of High-End Exclusive Street Fashion today.

Youth flocked from all over Japan to Ura-Harajuku...
In hopes of having their photo snapped for one of the many magazines covering the movement.

I actually used to see them lined up on the sidewalk, waiting to have their picture taken for one of the many Harajuku Photo Magazines documenting the culture, in the morning when I was heading out to work.

Many with dreams of reaching International Fashion Stardom or some sort of recognition... but...

Most were not even given a second look, let alone any sort of opportunity to enter.

More people probably made it in Hollywood - than anyone ever did into the secret, closed doors of Ura-Harajuku.

But, somehow, I was there... One of the very first and few foreigners allowed in 24/7 working at one of Japan's most exclusive fashion houses.
